“나는 2026년 3·1절을 맞이하여 우리 조상을 생각해 보았다.”

 

사실 인류 문명의 발달은 보이는 것을 사고하고 탐색하는 과정이라기보다, 보이지 않는 것을 사고하고 탐색해서 얻어낸 과학적 원리와 사실에서 비롯되었다고 생각해 본다. 물론 시발점은 보이는 것, 느끼는 것에서 시작되었으리라. ‘아이디어’나 ‘영감’이라는 말도 이와 같은 맥락의 단어일 것이다.

 

그러니 눈에 보이는 것만으로 쉽게 생각하고 판단하지 말자. 빠른 생각과 판단은 1차적인 뇌의 사고 작용이다. 여기에 몇 번씩 같은 질문을 던져보는 것이 현대 심리과학에서 말하는 2차적 뇌 작용이며, 그러한 사고 과정에서 사려 깊은 통찰을 얻어낼 수 있다고 한다.

 

너무 현재와 미래의 것들만 생각하기보다는, 인류의 집단지성이 경험 속에서 얻어낸 지혜를 사용하여 현재와 미래의 길을 열어가자. 나는 “조상의 빛난 얼을 되살려” 살자는, 어린 시절 배운 국민교육헌장을 깊이 생각해보곤 한다.

 

우리는 어머니의 뱃속에서 이성으로는 알지 못하는 10개월의 삶을 살았고, 그 이전에는 눈에 보이지 않는 부모의 세포 하나로 존재했었다. 과연 그 세포 하나에 프로그램되어 있는 유전자 게놈의 정체는 무엇일까? 왜 모든 사람은 다 다를까? 우리는 우리의 존재가 유전자로 계속 이어져 왔다는 사실을 망각하고 사는 것 같다. 바로 조상 대대로 내려오는 유전자 말이다.

 

나는 2026년 3·1절을 맞이하여 우리 조상을 생각해 보았다. 빛난 얼을 되살려 본다면, 순암 안정복의 삶과 《동사강목》에 담긴 주체적 역사관, 그리고 이를 바탕으로 역사관을 전개한 임시정부의 신채호 선생으로 이어지는 사상의 대물림 관계를 떠올릴 수 있다.

이어 같은 안씨 문중인 안중근 의사와 도산 안창호 선생을 생각해 보았다. 안중근 의사는 형제와 사촌 등 수많은 가문원이 임시정부와 관련하여 독립운동에 가담하였다. 도산 안창호 선생은 정파 간의 노선 갈등을 겪는 임시정부 지도자들을 보며 스스로 모범을 보였고, 인격 수양과 민족 단결을 강조했다. 안중근과 안창호, 두 분 모두 독실한 기독교 사상가이기도 했다.

 

순암 안정복으로부터 이어지는 신채호함, 안중근함, 도산안창호함 등 잠수함들의 위용과 활약을 보며 조상님들의 얼을 오늘날에 새겨본다. 모든 씨족과 문중의 조상 중에는 민족의 빛난 얼을 지닌 분들이 계시리라 생각한다. 2026년 3·1절을 맞이하여, 수많은 한반도 침략의 역사 속에서도 꿋꿋이 이어져 온 한민족 DNA 속의 빛난 얼을 오늘날 다시금 되새기기를 간절히 바란다.

"Reflecting on Our Ancestors on the Occasion of March 1st Movement Day, 2026"

I believe that the development of human civilization has stemmed not so much from the process of thinking about and exploring the visible, but rather from the scientific principles and facts obtained by contemplating and exploring the invisible. Of course, the starting point must have been what we see and feel. Terms like "idea" or "inspiration" likely carry this same context.

Therefore, let us not think and judge easily based only on what is visible to the eye. Rapid thought and judgment are primary cognitive functions of the brain. Modern psychological science suggests that asking the same question multiple times constitutes a "secondary brain function," and through such a process of thinking, one can gain thoughtful insights.

Rather than focusing solely on the present and the future, let us open the path for both by utilizing the wisdom that humanity’s collective intelligence has gained through experience. I often think deeply about the Charter of National Education I learned in my childhood, which urged us to live by "reviving the illustrious spirit of our ancestors."

We lived for ten months in our mother's womb—a life beyond the reach of our reason—and before that, we existed as a single, invisible cell from our parents. What is the true identity of the genetic genome programmed into that single cell? Why is every person different? It seems we live forgetting the fact that our existence has been continuously passed down through genes—specifically, the genes descending from our ancestors for generations.

In observance of March 1st Movement Day in 2026, I reflected on our ancestors. To revive that "illustrious spirit," one can recall the lineage of thought that connects the life of Sunam An Jeong-bok and his independent historical perspective in Dongsa Gangmok to Shin Chae-ho of the Provisional Government, who developed his historical views based on that foundation.

I then thought of Ahn Jung-geun and Dosan Ahn Chang-ho, who both belong to the same Ahn clan. Many of Ahn Jung-geun’s family members, including his brothers and cousins, participated in the independence movement in connection with the Provisional Government. Dosan Ahn Chang-ho, observing the factional conflicts among the leaders of the Provisional Government, led by example and emphasized character building and national unity. Both Ahn Jung-geun and Ahn Chang-ho were also devout Christian thinkers.

Witnessing the majesty and activities of submarines named after these figures—the ROKS Shin Chae-ho, ROKS Ahn Jung-geun, and ROKS Dosan Ahn Chang-ho—I engrave the spirit of our ancestors in my heart today. I believe that among the ancestors of every clan and lineage, there are those who possess the illustrious spirit of our nation. On this March 1st Movement Day of 2026, I sincerely hope that we once again reflect on that brilliant spirit within the Korean DNA, which has endured steadfastly through countless histories of invasion on the Korean Peninsula
