나는 아들의 생일을 맞아 조상의 얼을 다시 생각해본다.
이제 30대 후반에 들어서는 그는 우리 가문에서 유일하게 영어권 문화 속에서 성장한 아들이다.
젊은 시절의 분주함과 직장생활의 무게 속에서,
아직은 조상의 역사나 가문의 정신을 깊이 돌아볼 여유가 없을지도 모른다.

돌아보면, 나는 아들의 성장 과정 대부분을 미국 공교육과 사회에 맡긴 채,
나는 목회와 생업에 바쁘게 살아왔다.
아들이 대학에 들어가면서부터는 자연스럽게 미국인의 삶의 길로 들어섰고,
그 과정에서 우리는 언어의 장벽 때문에 마음 깊은 대화를 충분히 나누지 못한 채
서로의 세계를 멀리서 바라보며 살아왔다.

그러나 오늘, 그의 생일을 맞아 나는 다시 생각한다.
조상의 얼을 오늘에 되살리는 일은,
먼저 아버지인 내가 아들에게 다가가는 것에서 시작된다.

On my son’s birthday, I find myself reflecting on the spirit of our ancestors.
Now entering his late thirties, he is the only one in our family who grew up fully within the English-speaking world.
With the demands of work and the busyness of young adulthood,
he may not yet feel the need—or have the space—to think about his heritage.

Looking back, I realize that much of his upbringing unfolded within the American public school system,
while I was occupied with ministry and the responsibilities of life.
When he went off to college, he naturally stepped into the path of an American life,
and along the way, the language barrier kept us from sharing the deeper conversations of the heart.

But today, on his birthday, I am reminded of something important:
reviving the spirit of our ancestors begins with me reaching out to my son.

그러나 지금은 AI가 있어,
공신력 있는 자료를 바탕으로 내가 원하는 세계를 마음껏 탐구할 수 있고
그 모든 것을 영어로도 표현할 수 있으니 얼마나 다행인가 싶다.

그래서 언제, 어떻게 아들이 나의 의식세계와 함께할 수 있을지
장담할 수는 없지만,
언젠가 아들이 은퇴 후 시간이 많아지고
자신의 삶을 돌아보는 시기가 오면
내가 남긴 글들을 읽으며
심심함을 달래고, 생각을 정리하고,
조금은 나와 마음을 나누게 될지도 모른다는 생각이 든다.

그것이 의미 있는 이유는
나는 DNA 속에 새겨진 역사를 통해 일하시는 창조자 하나님을 믿기 때문이다.
혈통과 기억과 정신은 단절되지 않고
하나님이 허락하신 방식으로 이어진다고 믿는다.

그래서 나는 먼저 왕재덕 여사의 존재를 말하고 싶다.
그분은 아들의 외할머니 되는 분이다.
아내의 아버지의 어머니, 곧 아들의 외증조모와 같은 위치다.

나의 장인은 왕재덕 여사의 장손과 같은 위치에 있었다.
원래 왕재덕 여사의 남편 이영식의 형이 이씨 집안의 장손이었으나,
왕재덕 여사의 친장손이 독립운동에 연루되어
고문 후유증으로 젊은 나이에 세상을 떠났기에
결국 왕재덕 여사의 남편 이영식 가문에서도
장손의 역할이 그쪽으로 넘어가게 된 것이다.

남편 이영식도 일찍 세상을 떠났기에
왕재덕 여사는 2남 1녀를 둔 젊은 과부로
홀로 가정을 지켜야 했다.

그런데 놀라운 것은,
그분에게는 공산당도, 일본 경찰도 건드리지 못한 힘이 있었다는 점이다.
그 힘은 권력에서 나온 것이 아니라
황해도 신천을 중심으로 온 천하가 아는
**민심의 인정(人情)**에서 비롯된 것이었다고 한다.

실제로 당시 신문 기사에도
그분의 선행과 영향력이 기록되어 있다.
그것은 단순한 개인의 선행이 아니라
한 시대의 민심이 만들어낸 보이지 않는 권위였다.

But now, with the help of AI,
I can explore the world I longed to understand—
a world grounded in credible history—
and I can express it all in English as well.
For that, I am deeply grateful.

I cannot predict when or how my son
might one day share in this inner world of mine.
Right now, he is busy with work and the demands of life,
and perhaps he feels no need to think about heritage or ancestry.

Yet I imagine a time—maybe after he retires,
when life becomes quieter—
when he might look back on his own journey
and read the words I have written.
Maybe these writings will keep him company,
stir his thoughts,
and help him feel connected to something larger than himself.

This hope has meaning for me because
I believe in the Creator God who works through the history written in our DNA.
I believe that lineage, memory, and spirit
are not easily broken;
they continue in ways God Himself allows.

And so I want to begin by telling him about Madam Wang Jaedeok—
his great-grandmother on his mother’s side.
She was, in essence, the matriarch of his maternal line.

My father-in-law stood in the position of her eldest grandson.
Originally, the elder brother of Wang Jaedeok’s husband,
Mr. Lee Yeong-sik,
was the designated heir of the Yi family.
But when Madam Wang’s own eldest grandson
died young from the aftereffects of torture
related to his involvement in the independence movement,
the role of the family’s heir shifted within the household.

When her husband also passed away early,
Madam Wang was left a young widow
raising two sons and one daughter on her own.

What is remarkable is this:
neither the Communists nor the Japanese police
dared to touch her.
Her strength did not come from political power
but from something far greater—
the respect and loyalty of the people,
a moral authority recognized throughout Sincheon in Hwanghae Province.

record her deeds and the influence she carried.
It was not merely personal virtue;
it was the quiet, enduring authority
that rises from the heart of the people.
