“나는 정말 몰랐었다…”
나는 정말 몰랐었다.
도산 안창호 선생이 안식일 재림교회와 이렇게 깊은 친족 관계를 가지고 있었다는 사실을.
나는 젊을 때부터 채식주의자였다.
그래서 한국 안식교에서 운영하던 자연식 식당을 가끔 찾아가 음식을 사 먹곤 했다.
그러나 그보다 더 앞서, 내가 19살에 신학교에 들어갔을 때
‘이단 종파’ 수업에서 안식일 재림교회가 몰몬교와 함께 다루어졌다.
어린 마음에 “이단”이라는 말이 너무 무서웠다.
하지만 시간이 지나면서 생각이 달라졌다.
채식과 자연치유가 내 건강 철학과 맞았고,
이상구 박사의 뉴스타트 운동을 보면서 마음이 열렸다.
이민 와서는 25년이 지나 LA에서 양일권 박사의 백투에덴 강의도 들었다.
그러나 내가 속한 교단 때문에 발걸음을 멈추기도 했다.
2023년, 아내가 섬유근육통과 공황장애로 죽을 것 같은 고통을 겪었다.
우리는 모든 검사를 다 해보았고,
“죽을 거면 아들 있는 곳에서 죽자”는 마음으로
급히 새크라멘토로 이사했다.
은퇴한 나는 다시 마음을 정리했다.
“안식일 교회에 가서 자연치유 운동을 해보자.”
그러나 같은 아파트에 사는 한국인 집사님을 만나
한의학과 자연의학 박사이신 목사님 교회를 1년 가까이 다녔다.
하지만 내 마음에는 하나님께 드린 소원이 있었다.

그래서 2024년 5월, 나는 새크라멘토 안식일 교회로 발걸음을 옮겼다.
나는 은퇴한 초교파주의 목회자로서 정식 세례교인은 아니지만
그 교회에서 운영하는 마르페 힐링 선교사역의 충실한 멤버가 되었다.
그곳에서 건강 강의를 하시는 집사님이
“도산 안창호의 덕·체·지 사상은 안식일 교회의 삼육 사상과 같다”고 말해주었다.
그때는 그냥 흥미롭게 들었지만,
AI에게 도산의 부인과 친족 관계를 물어보면서
도산의 장인·동서·가까운 친척들이 모두 재림교회 초기 핵심 인물이었다는 사실을 알게 되었다.
이 사실은 내게 아주 큰 의미가 있다.
내 삶의 여정과도 연결되어 있기 때문이다.
게다가 한인회 봉사자들도
“새크라멘토 안식일 교회는 시설과 프로그램을 지역사회에 활짝 여는 모범 교회”라고 칭찬했다.
한인회 사무실 벽에 걸린 역대 회장 명단에서
조현포 장로님이 세 번이나 회장을 맡았다는 사실도 반가웠다.
그리고 또 하나의 큰 은혜는
이 교단의 메카인 앤드류스 신학대학 석사,
그리고 플러신학대학 박사이신
엄성현 박사님을 만난 것이다.
그분은 가정·결혼·관계 사역의 전문가이며
실리콘밸리에 거주하고 계신다.
이 모든 만남과 사건을 돌아보면
나는 지금 하늘 가는 밝은 길에서
주의 영광을 바라보도록 인도함을 받고 있다는 생각이 든다.
의미가 새롭다.
“I truly had no idea…”
I truly had no idea.
I never imagined that Dosan Ahn Chang-ho had such deep family ties with the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
I became connected to Adventists because I have been a vegetarian since my youth.
I often visited the natural-food restaurants run by the Adventist Church in Korea.
But earlier, when I was nineteen and entered seminary,
I learned in a class on “cults” that Adventists were grouped together with Mormons.
As a young student, the word “cult” frightened me.
Over time, however, my thinking changed.
Vegetarianism and natural healing matched my philosophy of health.
Dr. Sang Lee’s NEWSTART movement opened my mind even more.
After immigrating to the U.S., I attended Dr. Yang Il-kwon’s Back-to-Eden seminars in Los Angeles.
But because of my denominational background, I hesitated to go further.
In 2023, my wife suffered terribly from fibromyalgia and panic disorder.
We tried every test and treatment.
Finally, we said, “If we must die, let us die near our son,”
and we moved urgently to Sacramento.
After retiring, I thought,
“Maybe I should join the Adventist Church and practice natural healing again.”
But I met a Korean deacon in my apartment complex who introduced me to a pastor
with doctorates in Oriental and natural medicine.
I attended that church for almost a year.
Yet in my heart, I had a desire I had offered to God
(Philippians 2:13).
So in May 2024, I began attending the Sacramento Korean Seventh-day Adventist Church.
I am not a formal member,
but I am an active participant in the church’s interdenominational ministry,
the Marpe Healing Mission.
One day, a health lecturer at the church told me,
“Dosan Ahn Chang-ho’s philosophy of virtue, body, and mind
is the same as the Adventist ‘Samyook’ (threefold) education philosophy.”
I found that interesting.
Later, when I asked AI about Dosan’s wife and family,
I discovered something astonishing:
Dosan’s father-in-law, his brother-in-law, and close relatives
were all key figures in the early Adventist movement in Korea.
This discovery has deep personal meaning for me.
Korean community leaders also told me
that the Sacramento Adventist Church is a model church
that generously opens its facilities and programs to the community.
At the Korean Association office,
I was delighted to see that Elder Cho Hyun-po
served as president three times.
Another great blessing has been meeting
Dr. Sung Hyun Eom,
a graduate of Andrews University and Fuller Seminary,
a specialist in family and relationship ministry,
who lives in Silicon Valley.
Looking back on all these encounters,
I feel that God is leading me
on a bright path toward heaven,
allowing me to see His glory more clearly.
It is deeply meaningful.
