필립 안 커디는 단순한 독립운동가의 후손이 아니라,
도산 안창호 가문의 삶과 유산을 오늘의 미국 한인 사회에 이어주는
아주 특별한 사람이라고 나는 느낀다.

Philip Ahn Cuddy is not just a descendant of an independence activist.
To me, he is someone who carries the life and legacy of Dosan Ahn Chang-ho into today’s Korean American community.

그는 오래전부터 도산의 외손자로서
도산의 삶과 사상, 독립운동의 정신, 흥사단의 가치들을
팟캐스트와 강연을 통해 꾸준히 전해왔다.
그의 말투는 조용하지만 단단하고,
돌려 말하지 않는 솔직함이 있다.

For many years, he has shared Dosan’s philosophy, the history of the independence movement,
and the values of the Heungsadan through podcasts and talks.
His voice is calm yet firm, and he speaks without sugarcoating.

그는 외할아버지뿐 아니라
어머니인 Susan Ahn Cuddy—미 해군 최초의 아시아계 여성 장교이자
Time지에 “숨은 영웅”으로 소개된 인물—의 삶도 함께 전한다.
제대 후 NSA에서 일했던 어머니의 이야기를 들려주며
젊은 세대에게 정체성과 역사, 그리고 자긍심을 심어주는 일을 해왔다.

He also speaks about his mother, Susan Ahn Cuddy—the first Asian American woman officer in the U.S. Navy,
a “hidden hero” featured in Time magazine, and later an NSA officer.
Through her story, he helps younger generations understand identity, history, and pride.

한인 사회 내부의 문제들,
예를 들어 역사 왜곡이나 정치적 분열, 후손 이용 문제 같은 것들에 대해서도
그는 돌려 말하지 않는다.
그래서 어떤 사람들에게는 불편할 수도 있지만
나는 오히려 그 솔직함이 신뢰를 준다고 느낀다.

He also speaks frankly about issues within the Korean American community—
historical distortion, political division, and the misuse of independence activists’ descendants.
Some may find his honesty uncomfortable, but to me, it builds trust.

미국 사회 역시 그를
한국과 미국 양쪽 역사에 걸친 유산을 지닌 인물로 바라본다.
PBS 다큐멘터리 Asian Americans에서도
도산 가문이 소개되며 그의 존재가 조명되었다.

American society sees him as someone who carries a legacy that spans both Korean and American history.
The PBS documentary Asian Americans also introduced the Dosan family and highlighted his place within it.

그는 지금 71세다.
그러나 나는 그가 여전히
남은 생애의 중요한 과업을 의미 있게 추진하고 있다고 믿는다.
전 세계 750만 재외동포와 한국에 관심 있는 모든 사람을 위해
도산 정신을 현대화하고 미래화하는
온라인 문화 공간을 만들고 있다고 들었다.

He is now 71, yet I believe he is still carrying out meaningful work in the later chapter of his life—
building an online cultural space that modernizes Dosan’s spirit for millions of Koreans around the world.

나는 그가
안창호 일가의 모든 유산을 책임지고 이어가려는 마음을
진심으로 지지한다.
프랑스계 아버지와
도산의 맏딸이자 미국의 숨은 영웅인 안 수산 여사 사이에서 태어난 그가
완전히 한국인이 아니면서도
오히려 더 깊고 풍요롭게
도산의 정신을 이해하고 실천하는 모습이 참 인상적이다.

I support his intention to carry the entire legacy of the Ahn family into the future.
Born to a French American father and Susan Ahn Cuddy,
he is not fully Korean by blood, yet he embodies Dosan’s spirit more deeply than many Koreans.

그는 한국 근대사를 정확히 알고,
한국의 강점과 약점을 균형 있게 바라보며,
서양사상과 기독교 정신을 실천적 삶으로 녹여내는 사람이다.
그래서 나는 그에게 친밀감이 느껴진다.

He understands modern Korean history, sees Korea’s strengths and weaknesses with balance,
and lives out Western and Christian values in a way that resonates with Dosan’s life.
This is why I feel a sense of closeness to him.

나는 완전한 사람은 없다고 믿는다.
누구나 잘못도 있고 실패도 있다.
그러나 잘한 것도 반드시 있다.
사도 바울은 “죄가 많은 곳에 은혜가 더욱 넘친다”고 했다.
잘못과 실패를 긍휼히 바라보고 성찰하면
그 안에서 배움과 용기가 나온다.

I believe no one is perfect.
Everyone has faults and failures, but everyone also has goodness.
As the Apostle Paul said, “Where sin increased, grace increased all the more.”
When we look at mistakes with compassion, we find learning and courage.

나는 과거를 바라볼 때
잘못은 배움으로, 잘한 것은 계승함으로,
모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루는 방향을 지향하고 싶다.
그것이 도산이 말한 사랑의 길이고,
인격 훈련의 길이며,
대동단결의 힘이라고 믿는다.

When I look at the past, I want to learn from what was wrong and carry forward what was right.
This, I believe, is the path of love, character training, and unity that Dosan spoke of.

심리학 코칭을 공부하면서
듣기, 말하기, 감정 조율, 공감, 관점 전환, 회복탄력성…
이 모든 것이 평생의 훈련임을 배웠다.
그래서 나는 누구를 쉽게 판단할 수 없다고 느낀다.
나 자신도 마찬가지다.

Through psychological coaching, I’ve learned that listening, speaking, emotional regulation, empathy,
perspective-taking, and resilience are lifelong practices.
This is why I cannot judge others easily—nor myself.

시니어로서 나는
성화의 길, 신성의 길,
하늘 가는 밝은 길을
끝까지 걸어가고 싶다.

As a senior, I want to continue walking the path of growth, sanctification, and light.
