어제는 면역주사를 맞으러 병원에 들렀다.
그 길로 한인회에 들러 회보 발송 작업을 도왔다.
오늘은 금요일 병원에서 울트라사운드 검사를 마치고
곧바로 이사회에 참석했다.
이 글은 공식 공지문이 아니라
나의 개인적인 기록이다.
사람은 누구나
어린 시절부터 쌓여온 감각과 감정의 기억,
그리고 말로 설명하기 어려운 육감 속에서
자신만의 방식으로 생각하고 반응하며 살아간다.
오늘의 이사회도 그런 마음으로 바라보게 되었다.
오늘은 한국일보 장기자님이 가장 먼저 오셨다.
이어 사무총장님, 신점이 이사님, 부회장님이 도착했다.
회장님은 피자와 행사 준비물들을 한가득 들고 오셨다.
두 분의 남자 이사님들은
개인 업무로 참석하지 못했지만
회장님이 계속 소통하고 계신다고 한다.
3월부터 6월까지 이어지는
여러 행사 준비 이야기가 오갔다.
회장님이 가져오신 준비물들을 보며
나는 다시 한 번 감탄했다.
이런 일은
청소년기부터 몸에 밴 봉사 경험이 없으면
해낼 수 없는 역량이다.
이런 사람이 또 있을까 하는 생각이 들었다.
서청진 이사장님도 마찬가지다.
스포츠 우먼다운 체력과 추진력으로
청소년 봉사단을 이끌고
회장님과 호흡을 맞추며
모든 행사들을 꼼꼼하게 챙기고 계신다.
세세한 일까지 직접 챙기며
번아웃될 정도로 헌신하는 모습에서
깊은 감동을 받았다.
한인회를 이끈다는 것은
많은 시간과 노력을 요구하는 일이다.
전문직을 잠시 내려놓고
공동체를 위해 헌신할 수 있는 사람을 찾는 것도 쉽지 않다.
바쁜 현대 생활 속에서
이런 역량을 가진 분들이 있다는 것이
참 감사하다.
각 이사님들도
자신의 자리에서 역할을 다하고 있다.
장이사님은 기자로서 기록을 담당하고,
부회장님은 회장님의 손발이 되어 움직인다.
사무총장님은 통역과 행정에서 큰 역할을 한다.
남자 이사님 한 분은
대우 출신으로 영상 촬영 기술을 가지고 있어
행사 기록을 맡게 되었고,
또 다른 분은
타주에서부터 관심을 가지고 참여하는 분으로
비즈니스를 운영하며 시간을 내고 있다.
오늘 가장 인상 깊었던 질문은 이것이었다.
“이 행사를 우리끼리만 하면 무슨 의미가 있겠는가.”
결국 핵심은
미국 새크라멘토의 영어권 American들과
어떻게 관계를 맺고 교류할 것인가이다.
SNS는 그 통로다.
그러나 몇 사람의 개인 네트워크만으로는 부족하다.
여러 교회와 한인들이 함께 참여해야
공동체의 힘이 생긴다.
나는 한인 교회들이
더 적극적으로 공동체의 움직임에 참여해주길 바랐다.
초기 미국 선교사들이
한민족을 하나님의 형상으로 회복시키고자 했던 마음,
3.1운동 시절 교회가 앞장섰던 역사,
그 정신을 기억한다면
지금도 교회가 공동체의 중심이 되어야 하지 않을까.
결국 2세들이
주류사회에서
크리스천 한인 DNA와 민족적 사명을 품은 인재로 성장하도록 돕는
그런 공동체가 필요하다.
오늘 회의에서 가장 마음이 뜨거워진 순간은
6.25 행사 이야기였다.
한국전에 참전했던 미국 군인을 찾아 초대하고,
한인 공동체 이름으로 감사의 마음을 전하며,
그 이야기를 미국 언론에 알려
우리가 고마움을 잊지 않는 민족임을 보여주자는 제안이었다.
마침 신점이 이사님의 남편이
미국 해외 파병 군인 연합회 부회장이라는 사실이 알려지면서
참전 용사 조사를 할 수 있는 길이 열렸다.
이사회를 마치며
도산 안창호 선생과 이혜련 여사,
그리고 당시 앞장섰던 한인 여성들의 헌신이 떠올랐다.
오늘 함께한 여성 이사님들의 모습 속에서
그 정신이 다시 느껴졌다.
그리고 한 가지 더 깊이 느낀 점이 있다.
새크라멘토는
캘리포니아의 주도이자
미국 정치와 행정의 중심지다.
이곳의 한인회가 모범을 보이고,
여기서 자란 2세들이 서로 연결되고,
타주 한인회와도 자연스럽게 이어진다면,
새크라멘토 한인회는
단순한 지역 단체를 넘어
미국 내 한인 커뮤니티 전체에
영향력을 미치는 중심축이 될 수 있다.
이곳에서 시작된 작은 움직임이
미국 전역의 한인회들을 잇는 다리가 되고,
2세들이 서로를 알아보고 협력하는
플랫폼이 되기를 바란다.
오늘의 이사회는
그 가능성을 다시 확인한 하루였다.

Yesterday I went to the hospital for an immune injection.
After that, I stopped by the Korean Association to help with the newsletter mailing.
Today, after finishing my ultrasound exam,
I went straight to the board meeting.
This is not an official announcement—
just a personal record of my day.
Every person carries memories and impressions formed since childhood.
These include our senses, our emotions,
and the quiet intuition that guides how we think and respond.
I found myself reflecting on today’s meeting through that lens.
Director Jang from the Korea Times arrived first.
Then the Secretary General, Director Shin, and the Vice Chair came in.
The President arrived last, carrying pizza
and many items needed for upcoming events.
Two male directors could not attend due to work,
but the President has been communicating with them individually.
We discussed preparations for events scheduled
from March through June.
Seeing the President’s detailed preparation
reminded me once again
that such work requires years of volunteer experience
and a deep sense of responsibility.
It is rare to find someone with that level of dedication.
Chairwoman Seo Cheong-jin is the same.
With the strength and discipline of a lifelong athlete,
she leads the youth volunteer group
and works closely with the President,
taking care of every detail.
Her commitment is remarkable,
even to the point of risking burnout.
Leading a Korean Association requires
time, sacrifice,
and a willingness to set aside one’s professional life
for the sake of the community.
In today’s busy world,
it is not easy to find people who can do this.
I am grateful for those who do.
Each board member contributes in their own way.
Director Jang fulfills his role as a journalist.
The Vice Chair works closely with the President.
The Secretary General supports with translation and administration.
One male director, formerly with Daewoo,
has strong video production skills
and will document events.
Another director travels from another state
while still running a business,
participating out of genuine interest in the community.
One of the most meaningful questions raised today was:
“What is the value of holding these events
if they remain only among ourselves?”
The real challenge is building relationships
with English-speaking Americans in Sacramento,
the state capital.
Social media is the bridge,
but a few personal networks are not enough.
Churches and Korean community members
must participate for the community to grow stronger.
I found myself hoping
that Korean churches would take a more active role.
Early American missionaries in Korea
longed to restore the Korean people
as bearers of God’s image.
During the March 1st Movement,
churches stood at the forefront.
Remembering that history,
I believe churches today
can once again play a central role.
Ultimately, we need a community
that helps second-generation Korean Americans
grow into leaders
who carry both Christian identity
and a sense of cultural mission.
The most inspiring moment today
was the discussion about the upcoming Korean War commemoration.
We hope to locate American veterans
who fought in the Korean War,
invite them,
express our gratitude as a community,
and share the story with American media
to show that we are a people
who do not forget kindness.
It was a pleasant surprise to learn
that Director Shin’s husband
serves as the Vice President
of the U.S. Overseas Deployment Veterans Association.
This opened a new path
for finding Korean War veterans.
As the meeting ended,
I was reminded of Dosan Ahn Chang-ho,
his wife Lee Hye-ryeon,
and the Korean women
who stood at the forefront
of the independence movement in America.
Seeing the dedication of the women directors today
brought that history back to life.
And one more thought stayed with me.
Sacramento is the capital of California
and a center of American civic life.
If the Korean Association here
continues to set a strong example,
and if second-generation Korean Americans
build networks through this organization,
those connections can naturally extend
to Korean Associations in other states.
In that sense,
the Sacramento Korean Association
has the potential to grow into a community
with influence far beyond its region—
a hub that connects Korean Americans
across the country,
and a platform where second-generation leaders
can find one another and collaborate.
What begins here
could become a bridge
linking Korean Associations nationwide.
Today’s meeting reminded me
that such a future is truly possible.
